Any Ivy Bridge laptops that were produced/on sale in 2015/2016 (2015 the year when Ivy Bridge was discontinued)? My Acer Aspire E1-531 bit the dust today. Besides the noise it would make when closing/opening the lid, the fan started to make noise on and off. The graphics would also show weird lines and freeze up whenever it did, even in the BIOS. I then tried to open it up to see what was wrong and broke a hinge in the process.
It was a really great laptop that served various purposes well from 2013-2021, including its most recent stint with Windows Vista Extended Kernel. RIP. Needless to say its 8GB of Ram is usable in a much newer Acer to upgrade that from 2 to 8.
I purchased my Ivy Bridge 'Dell Inspiron 15R' in late 2012, just in time, before Dell and other PC manufacturers stopped pre-installed copies of the Win 7 OS. This was intentional. Changing the OS from "10" would have voided any manufacturers warranty. I'm not sure when the last of the "Ivy Bridge" PCs and laoptops were sold, honestly. Could've been 2015. According to intel's website, it was introduced the 3rd quarter of 2012.
The Acer you speak of, that was a pretty rugged machine? Sounds like you got your moneys worth out of it. I too had a laptop (Compaq) go dead because of lid issues. It was sent off for warranty work, but never returned. Apparently, the part needed couldn't be sourced. Best Buy was nice enough to replace the unit with something comparable (and newer) at no charge. It didn't freeze up or anything, the screen simply wouldn't come on because of a faulty switch.
One last question, how were you able to use the old RAM in a newer Acer? Just got lucky?
And sorry about your loss. RIP.
