Do you think when Google drops Chromium support for Windows 7 they'll drop 8.1 support at the same time just like they did with Vista when they dropped support for XP?

Chromium can be compiled, so having it even after the end of support is possible.

Yes. Aboslutely yes. I'd be utterly shocked if they were not dropped simultaneously.

It's almost certain. 8.x was unsuccessful just like Vista was, so it'll probably have support pulled at the same time as 7 if history is doomed to repeat itself.

I expect so.

On a side note, I genuinely have to wonder if M$ is somehow 'lobbying' FOSS projects into forcibly dropping Windows 7 support much quicker than its elder brethren XP, given the speed at which many of these projects have been dropping support compared to how slow they were to drop Windows XP (which took until about 2017-2018 in most cases before both XP/Vista were nearly unusable with recent open-source software, yet 7 has been dropped already by multiple vendors just one year into EOL).

Also OP resize your fucking signature, it's bigger than the Superbar right now and just makes your post look bigger than it actually is.

Can you also compile a modern Chromium to work with Windows XP?

Maybe, but probably not.

And what about Firefox? There are Firefox based browsers, so maybe it´s possible to compile a real Firefox for XP.

From what I know, rust is a nightmare in terms of XP compaibility.

Yeah, Rust is the main component if I remember right (I don't think it ever properly supported XP correctly).

If they don't follow this tradition, I'll be swept back in shock. History shall repeat itself. Fortunately NT 6.x (especially 8.1) is far more similar to 10 than XP was to 7. So I'm sure Chromium rebuilds targeting 7 and 8/8.1 aren't be far off the horizon. I talked with the developer from Advanced Chrome about this and he said he'd do what he can, but he's uncertain about the complexity of such an endevor in the long run. Win32 seems far more enthusiastic about it though.

I'm expecting an easier time overall with Firefox/Waterfox. It's given me less pain in general these days. From the Waterfox sub:

There is, of course Pale Moon/UXP as well. Some quirky limitations, but not bad overall. Do remember to correctly refer to emojis as emoticons though. Else you risk a terribly uncomfortable encounter with a certain local. Do abstain from mentioning XP/Vista x_x

I think Pale Moon and UXP will keep supporting 7, because Tobin uses 7, and it's literally a Firefox 52 descendant.

That's a given https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=21685

Thread is dead, but might as well give a update that apparently hasn't made the rounds much on news sites.

Google has extended Chrome support on Windows 7 to January 15th 2023.

I wonder why Chrome extended up to 2023 could be associated with neither:

1. Chrome EOL were very too early for Win7 EOL since many users during the pandemic even with the vaccine already there still at work from home for various reasons again many cases

2. They could end up in a big backlash. Maybe also many businesses still use Win7 and it would dissapoint them if they didnt extend.

3. Browser's titlebar code issue on Windows 8's end or Windows 7 that resulted to the delay. Because Chrome has its own native titlebar version for Windows 10 and 11.

4. Users would eventually use alternative browser, etc. etc (i assume other issue could follow, but thats just my point of view). Wonder why conspiracy theory on some open source software stuff became a thing because of Tobin.
